Moody Aviation Curriculum

Moody Aviation trains pilots and mechanics specifically for service as missionary aviators. From day one through graduation our curriculum incorporates procedures, decision making skills and professionalism while flying the aircraft that will best prepare them for mission service. The missions our graduates serve with have requested that we include as much high-performance single engine Cessna flight training as possible. Therefore, during the aircraft transition courses our students fly Cessna R182 (high-performance / complex), Cessna A185F (high-performance / tailwheel) and Cessna U206G (high-performance and the mission standard work horse) to form a firm foundation in this area. Following the initial aircraft transitions the students enroll in advanced flight training and learn the basics of mountain navigation and back country airstrip operations using the 185 and 206. This training often becomes the highlight of the training experience while at Moody! One of our instructors is known to say “The 185 transition training helps to make boys into men as a pilot.” As students fly the high-performance tailwheel aircraft they gain a very real appreciation for coordination and the need to fly the airplane from the time they enter the cockpit to the time they chock the wheels at the end of the flight. We can always tell the increase in students’ situational awareness and skill level as an aviator at the conclusion of tailwheel training.

Moody Aviation has been blessed by God’s provision of generous partners, mission personnel and training aircraft to enable our program to operate. We have been praying for God to provide a 185 to incorporate in the fleet by July 2010 to take the place of the 185 we are currently leasing which will be unavailable in the fall for our extended cross country project. The opportunity that God has presented to bring “N185PR” back into the Moody Aviation fleet as our primary tailwheel trainer is a direct answer to that prayer! Not only does the aircraft fit the bill as the correct model to match our curriculum needs, but the instrument panel layout, avionics equipment, engine management systems installed in this machine were all designed specifically to match the aircraft fleet at Moody in order to provide maximum transfer of learning as students move from one stage of training to the next.
